El Hoyo is named for the huge collapsed crater on its flank. The trail follows volcanic ridgeline with big views over the Maribios chain, finishing at the cool waters of Lake Asososca. Do it as a long day hike or camp overnight and add a Cerro Negro descent.

It's one of our more challenging routes, crossing lava fields and ridgeline with big views. Good fitness and closed-toe hiking shoes are recommended.
Can you swim at Lake Asososca on the El Hoyo tour?
Yes. The route finishes at the cool crater waters of Lake Asososca, where you can swim and relax.
Is El Hoyo a day hike or an overnight trek?
Both are available. You can do it as a long day hike or camp overnight, and you can add a Cerro Negro volcano-boarding descent.
